What does momme mean in silk?
Momme (mm) is silk's weight unit - 19-25 momme is durable for shirts and pillowcases; below 16 is delicate.
One momme equals 4.34 grams per square meter, and it is the silk equivalent of thread count - except honest. A 19mm silk shirt drapes and survives regular wear; 22-25mm is the luxury tier used in good pillowcases and washable silk sets; 30mm is heavy, almost suiting-weight. Below 16mm, silk is gauzy, snags easily, and belongs in lingerie and scarves, not shirts. Momme matters more than the word 'mulberry' in a listing - virtually all commercial silk is mulberry. If a seller advertises silk without stating momme, assume it is under 16 and priced to hide it.
